| • | Anti-adhesion, fibrin sealant, or both? | |
|
Recent (fall 2008) clinical data is supporting the unusual premise that fibrin sealants, used for the sealing, closure and hemostasis of wounds, may also, when used appropriately, reduce the incidence, extent and severity of post-surgical adhesions. Clinical data from Haemacure's fibrin sealant, and similar investigative work by Angiotech on its CoSeal product, have opened up considerable new potential for these products in the large and largely unfulfilled market for anti-adhesion. Sealants and securement products (encompassing sutures and staples, tapes, haemostats, sealants, high strength glues, and adhesion prevention products) offer distinct clinical and economic benefits. The clinical efficacy and cost benefits of using sealant and securement products are reviewed in the "advanced medical technologies" blog. This is also covered in Report #S175, "Worldwide Surgical Sealants, Glues and Wound Closure, 2009-2013."
